NCCU RTV Graduation Exhibtion

For those who are in EBM, you may be interested to visit Taiwan's NCCU graduation Exhibition website at http://rtv15.nccu.edu.tw

I went for the later half of the 2nd day, & attended almost the whole of the 3rd day.
Would say that we (yes, the NTU CSians) are indeed better (technically) but they do have some interesting ideas in their films and documentaries. I personally recommend this documentary called 乐生活 which features a leprosy home and its patients, in an ongoing protest with the government to protect their rights.

They had a series of promotional activities prior to the exhibition, even went on TV. haha!!

This is an extract from a supposed media insider regarding the current state of affairs in our local media. Read it, but take it with a pinch of salt because I couldn't verify the identity of the writer, after all, he or she probably doesn't want to be identified anyway.

"I had no illusions about the independence of the local media when I first started my job as a [------] in Singapore. I knew that my work would be edited, and possibly censored for political safety, and I was mostly fine with that - no media channel anywhere in the world is entirely free from some form of editorial trimming, after all.

What I didn't bargain for was individual self-censorship, unspoken policies and rules, and the stoutness with which people swallowed their journalistic dignity and integrity (because it does exist, even strongly, in some places) to toe the party line. Incredible as it seems, reporters in Singapore do have the same fierce pride in their work as reporters anywhere else; I think this is especially evident in sections of the media that don't touch on politics.

But when it comes to political news, particularly something as sensitive as the elections, many of us leave our brains and consciences at home and resign ourselves to doing what we're told and writing what's being dictated. To some extent I appreciate the rationale of this - there really is a very close watch being kept on the media and when we're kept in line it's largely for our own safety.

However, as someone still young and naive and idealistic, it's hard for me to swallow the indignation I feel whenever I see the local media doggedly ignoring its otherwise sharply-honed news sense. Articles and TV programmes are edited to balance out pro-opposition views; awesome camera opportunities - like the opposition rallies - are studiously left out of media coverage; banal and unfair quotes and tactics are highlighted and headlined simply because they are tools of the ruling party.

There are many things journalists see that the eyes of the public are not privy to, and that we would like to report on but can't. Please remember that when you read an article or watch a broadcast that seems particularly, emetically subjective. And help spread the word that a lot of us in the media are sorry that we can't do the job we want to. It may not mean a lot to you, but it sucks for us that for every day that we covered the elections, people's opinions of us plummeted - despite the fact that we worked our asses off in 14-hour days with no breaks on weekends or public holidays to bring you our version of the news.

And for those who think it's as easy as quitting your jobs and following your conscience - grow up. This is a job. It puts food on our tables. We can all up and leave, but it's ridiculously easy to replace us with more party-line-spouting drones. With educated and politically aware journalists in the local media, at least civil society in Singapore stands a fighting chance. So despise and condemn us all you like, but whatever you believe in, it's highly likely we believe in it too. And it's also likely that we're doing something about it, in our own little ways, even if it's as small as writing about and expressing our dissatisfaction with the system from the inside.
Don't give up on us. We haven't given up on our ideals."

hmmm... well, according to the taxi driver, the drugs & frequent police raidings killed the business. In addition, the location is quite crappy.
All the way north up. Not centralised at all. Why would people go all the way there... tsk tsk.

Anyway, Lin Hui & I & our friend ended up at some club near Taipei 101.
R&B + hip hop + free flow of drinks + a lot of little kids. eeeeeekssssss!!
The only good thing is tt we met this boy who was amusingly entertaining. wahhahahaa.

For those of you folks who are eligible to vote in this coming election but unable to do so because you are overseas, here's some info...

>>> What if I do not vote at an election?
At the end of the election, the Returning Officer will put your name, together with all others who did not vote at the election, in the list of non-voters and pass that to the Registration Officer. The Registration Officer will then remove your name from the certified register of electors. This means that you cannot vote at any subsequent presidential or parliamentary election, and you are disqualified from being a candidate at any subsequent presidential or parliamentary election.

>>> Can I get my name back on the register of electors for my constituency?
You can do so anytime by applying to the Registration Officer with an explanation as to why you did not vote. You can find out how to do this at Check Register of Electors. However, a penalty is imposed if you do not have valid and sufficient reason for not voting. You must pay $5 to restore your name to the register of electors if you do not give valid and sufficient reason.Please apply early to restore your name to the register of electors after any election. Law prohibits the Registration Officer from restoring your name to the register of electors for your constituency if any writ of election is issued for that constituency. The Registration Officer can do so only after the election for that constituency is over. In the meantime you will not be allowed to vote at any poll or stand as a candidate in that constituency.

I watched 7 movies in a row. New record thanks to video-on-demand on Singapore Airlines! Doesn't do much good for the eyes though.

Arrived in Jonkoping sometime around noon, had Serene's wonderful contact pick us up from Jonkoping airpot. Her name's Annika and she's really nice. She basically brought us around the campus and showed us around, day 1 wouldn't have gone by so smoothly had it not been for her. She brought along her son as well when she came to pick us up, he's 5 and his name is Issac and he's the most adorable, energetic and talkative kid I've ever met.

I was offered a room in this place called Dalvik. It's on a hill top and has a park right outside. The weather's pretty mild, about -2 degrees when we arrived. Nothing you can't handle with some extra layers. I do think it's good for the skin though so I'm looking forward to have my complexion clear up (hopefully) heh heh heh. Cost of living here is pretty high, and even the food from the supermarket isn't all that cheap. I'll have to watch my spending carefully if I want to keep my bank account out of the red.

Took some quick shots of my room after I unpacked and I dare say it should be pretty cosy for the next 6 months. Although I'm a little sore about the fact that I couldn't arrive earlier so the MUCH bigger room was taken by my roommate, this guy from Germany. He's a really nice guy though and it's not like I need the extra space, although it would be nice if you know what I mean. From looking through the door I could see that his room also has some extra furnitures such as a coffee table and a sofa couch. Otherwise we share the rest of the apartment which includes a balcony, kitchen and bathroom.

Now I just have to get my internet up and running before I can get online. I think I'm an internet addict because right now I feel really naked without my broadband connection.

*Update - Internet finally up and running, thus this post (duh). Off to sleep now, pictures and more updates to follow.

The Cork-Ker-Nar-Dens 4 were on the way back from salvation army trip when 2 of us saw a bunch of NJC guys running in the rain on the track with brollys..(imagine a file of 2 by 2 guys with brollys running at NJC)

ironically, just near them was a group of girls doing the same thing, ahem, but without brollys.

Role reversal...an extreme one. (kinda shocked my heart out)
